Latinos going strong in Miss Universe: Miss Mexico
font size

Rosa Maria Ojeda, Mexico's contestant at the 2007 Miss Universe beauty pageant, said on Wednesday that the Latino contenders were going strong in the final days of the event.

She told Xinhua that her relationship with other Latin American contestants had been close and that she felt very empathetic, especially toward her counterparts from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Argentina and Nicaragua.

"I get along very well with Miss Nicaragua," with whom she shares a room, Ojeda said. "We help each other. We try to make each day more interesting and less tiring," she added.

Ojeda expressed thanks to the Mexican public for their support, recalling the cheers she received at the weekend when appearing in traditional costume. "It is much more than expected," she said.

"I want to give my fans a positive message about all that has happened in my life, my experiences; that they should reach their goals and never allow themselves to be defeated," Miss Mexico said.

Ojeda, 20, was born in Culiacan in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa. At the age of 15, she had to fight thyroid cancer.

On Wednesday, the beauty queens will compete in the first two rounds of the pageant: the swimming suit and evening wear contests.

Five of the past 10 winners are from the Americas including Wendy Fitzwilliam from Trinidad and Tobago, Denise Quinones from Puerto Rico, Justine Pasek from Panama, Amelia Vega from the Dominican Republic and the current Miss Universe, Zuleyka Rivera, from Puerto Rico.
