U.S. soldier killed in explosion south of Baghdad
An American soldier died of wounds he sustained in a roadside bomb explosion south of Baghdad, the U. S. military said on Sunday.
The soldier was wounded when the bomb went off at about 7:15 p. m. (1515 GMT) on Friday south of the Iskandariyah town, some 50 km south of the capital, a military statement said.
He died in a military medical treatment facility, the statement added.
Iskandariyah town located in an insurgent stronghold area, better known as "Triangle of Death" where five U.S. soldiers were killed and three more went missing in an attack near Mahmoudiyah, some 30 km south of Baghdad on Saturday.
U.S. and Iraqi soldiers backed by aircraft are hunting for the three missing soldiers Sunday in a massive search campaign in the area.
More than 3,390 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion broke out in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
