Chinese fair concludes with record high export contracts
font size

China's largest trade fair, known as the Canton Fair, wrapped up its 101st session on Monday in south China's Guangzhou city with export deals worth a record 36.39 billion U.S. dollars, up 6.8 percent from the previous fair.

A total of 206,749 overseas buyers from 211 countries or regions attended the fair, up 7.3 percent from last autumn's fair. The number of African customers surged 73.5 percent to 16,265.

European buyers attending the fair, which ran from April 15 to 30, dropped by 5.5 percent to 38,357, but they continued to be the biggest spenders signing contracts worth 12 billion U.S. dollars.

Machinery and electronics made up 40.3 percent of the total value of export deals, followed by light industrial products and garments and textiles.

The trade fair had been a biannual event for promoting export until the 101st session, which was officially renamed as the China Import and Export Fair from the Chinese Export Commodities Fair.

The government makes this adjustment to facilitate import and narrow China's trade surplus, which tends to trigger trade friction with some countries.

For the first time, the fair featured an exhibition area for import commodities, where 314 companies from 36 countries and regions set up booths to promote their products.
