Bomb attack kills at least one in Baghdad

A roadside bomb detonated Saturday morning near a crowd of laborers in southeastern Baghdad, killing at least one worker and injuring more than eight others, a police source said.

"A roadside bomb went off while many laborers gathered in the al-Za'afaraniyah neighborhood, killing a worker and wounding more than eight others," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blast damaged several nearby buildings and shops along with several civilian cars, the source said.

All the wounded have been shifted to hospital and the killed to the morgue, he added.

Violence persists in Baghdad despite the presence of tens of thousands of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers across the capital in a major security crackdown aimed at curbing insurgency and sectarian violence.
