CBS suspends racially charged radio hosts, Chinese American group says not enough

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) said on Tuesday they demand the immediate dismissal of the two hosts as well as the producer of a prank call show from CBS Radio, in which the hosts called employees of a Chinese restaurant and used "racist, vulgar and sexist" profanities.

"CBS's decision to suspend the two hosts is not enough. The hosts will come back and the producer is still working. We demand firing all of them," OCA-New York President Vicki Shu Smolin said

Albert Wang, an attorney on the OCA advisory board, said freedom of speech in the United states has limits, it does not mean the media can speak what they want.

He encouraged Chinese Americans to write to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to build up pressure on CBS.

Still recovering from the Don Imus scandal, CBS Radio suspended The Dog House stars JV (Jeff Vandergrift) and Elvis (Dan Lay) on Monday after they twice broadcast a racially charged prank call to employees at a Chinese restaurant.

The hosts of the daily morning show, WFNY-FM's "The Dog House With JV and Elvis," have been suspended indefinitely without pay, CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo told The New York Times in an e-mail on Monday.

One of the hosts, Jeff Vandergrift, apologized on Monday's show, she said.

OCA wrote a letter to Thomas Chiusano, the station's president and general manager, calling for an immediate apology by the hosts of the "racist, vulgar and sexist" segment, JV & Elvis, their producer and the station, the leading Chinese American group said in a press release.

In addition, OCA demanded the immediate firing of JV & Elvis and their show's producer.

The Dog House with JV & Elvis is a terrestrial radio talk show airing in New York City on 92.3 Free FM, a part of CBS Radio. The Dog House stars JV and Elvis. The two met in 1993 and have been radio co-hosts (along with JV's high school friend and show producer "Hollywood" Lance Otani) for some 15 years.

Prank phone calls are considered one of the most controversial parts in their program. This segment involves JV or Elvis calling random people from the phone book and the calls are usually humiliating.
