Panama gets World Bank loan for rural development
font size

The World Bank has approved a 39.4-million-U.S. dollar loan to Panama for rural development and environmental protection, local media reported Monday.

The money will be used to help rural farmers form production and trade alliances to share the risks and benefits of the market, Jane Armitage, the bank's Central America director, said.

She added that in order "to increase income and well-being in rural areas, small farmers' productivity must be improved."

The loan will also be used to help prevent the exhaustion of raw materials in rural areas and fight deforestation.
