Hundreds of people attended the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, according to the report reaching here from Bratislava on Monday.

The official celebrations were inaugurated by Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Dusan Caplovic, Slovak EU Commissioner Jan Figel and representatives from other countries and organizations .

Caplovic hoped that Slovakia will continue to take an active part in the discussions about the future of the European Union.

The morning programme of the event focused mainly on Slovak students and youths.

Irena Fonodova, head of a lifelong education programme in Slovakia, said that thanks to the country's EU accession, Slovak young people have better chances to fulfill themselves in rather broader dimensions.
