China, Sri Lanka to further relationship

China and Sri Lanka should take the chance to enhance the all-round and cooperative partnership, said a leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Saturday.

The year of 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of China-Sri Lanka diplomatic ties, and is the year of friendship between the two countries, said Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee,

He said Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse visited China in late February and reached consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on furthering bilateral ties.

"China, which regards Sri Lanka as a good neighbor, friend and partner, will take the chance to implement the agreement reached by the two heads of state, " he said in a meeting with Maithripala Sirisena, general secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Wu hailed the traditional friendship between the two peoples, saying no matter how international and domestic situations changed, China-Sri Lanka relations have remained to grow.

He pledged to promote the party-to-party exchanges between the two states.

Sirisena expressed gratitude for China's long-term assistance to Sri Lanka, reaffirming that his party and government would continue to adhere to the one-China policy.
