The newly appointed Albanian cabinet members on Tuesday took an oath of office in an official ceremony presided over by Albanian President Alfred Moisiu.

"Cabinet reshuffle should give a new impetus to the government, " Moisiu said at the ceremony. "And it should make valuable contributions to government's decision-making and the healthy development of political life in this country."

Gazmend Oketa replaced Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Rusmajli, who took over the Justice Ministry. Bujar Nishani is the new Minister of Interior; Ili Pango is the new Minister of Culture; Majlinda Bregu took up the post of Minister for European Integration -- all members of Sali Berisha's Democratic Party.

Nard Ndoka, the leader of Demo-Christian Party, was appointed new Minister of Health.

The shake-up in Sali Berisha's government comes just a month after the local elections, in which the opposition grouping gained victory in Albania's largest cities, while the ruling coalition got an upper hand in rural areas.

It is the first cabinet reshuffle since the Democrat-led coalition came to power after winning the July 3rd, 2005 parliament elections. It had spent eight years in opposition.
