Venezuela vaccinates 95 percent of cattle against foot-and-mouth

Venezuela has vaccinated 95 percent of cattle in the country against foot-and-mouth disease, Agriculture and Land Minister Elias Jaua Milano said Thursday.

Some 4 million vaccinations were administered free of charge, he said, adding that Venezuela plans to set up dozens of animal health laboratories in the nation.

Foot-and-mouth disease affects animals with clove hooves such as cattle, pigs, deer, goats and sheep. The virus can be spread between animals, through the air and on clothing.

In January, an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease was reported in eastern Bolivia. It was the first such outbreak in three and a half years.
