The website, in Chinese and English, launched yesterday, is the sole official one for ticketing information and bookings.
At present it is accepting domestic registrations and next month it will accept ticket reservations. People can also check out the Games competition schedule, ticketing prices, ordering procedure, ticketing policies and venues.
People who can buy tickets through the website and designated Bank of China ticket outlets include Chinese citizens, foreigners and compatriots from foreign countries, Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan Province, who have an established residence on the Chinese mainland. Short-term travellers do not qualify.
It is estimated that 7 to 8 million tickets are available for the 2008 Games and nearly half will be sold domestically.
According to a poll conducted by the website, the five most popular events for Chinese people are the opening and closing ceremonies, diving, gymnastics, swimming and athletics.
The average ticket price is much lower than that of previous Olympic Games so more local people will be able to attend the sporting event.
Tickets for the opening ceremony are from 200 yuan ($27) to 5,000 yuan ($640); for the Olympic qualifications from 30 yuan ($3.5) to 300 yuan ($38); and for the finals, 60 yuan ($7.7) to 1,000 yuan ($128).
At the Athens 2004 Games, ticket prices for the opening ceremony ranged from 100 euro ($125) to 950 euro ($1,200) and the average ticket price for all other events was $43.75.
