Iran accuses West of kidnapping former senior official
font size

Iran accused on Tuesday the West of abducting a former senior official who was missing during his private trip to Turkey, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Ali Reza Asghari, a former deputy defense minister and retired general in the Revolutionary Guards, was on a private trip to Turkey from Damascus, Syria.

Iran's top police chief Gen. Esmaeil Ahmadi Moghaddam was quoted as saying that "it's possible that Asghari had been kidnapped by the Western intelligence agencies."

Tehran had been investigating the issue with the help of the Turkish authorities, he added.

According to earlier reports, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has requested the Interior Ministry to investigate the issue under demands from the Iranian embassy in Ankara.
