Brazilian Kaka gets Italian citizenship

Brazil playmaker Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, known as Kaka, was given Italian citizenship on Monday.

Kaka will not be eligible to play for Italy because he has already played for Brazil but the citizenship will Kaka eligible to appear for AC Milan as a European Union player, freeing up a place in the squad for a non-EU player.

The 25-year-old midfielder was a member of the Brazilian team that won its fifth World Cup title in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, and a starter for the squad that reached the quarterfinals of last year's tournament.

He also played for the country's Olympic and under-20 teams, including at the 2001 World Youth Championship.
