Death toll rises to at least 34 killed in bomb attacks in downtown Baghdad

The death toll rose to at least 34 and 140 people wounded in double car bombings and a homemade bomb blasts in downtown Baghdad markets on Monday, an Interior Ministry source said.

"Our latest report said that at least 34 people were killed and more than 140 other wounded by the two attacks," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A simultaneous car bomb blasts went off around midday in the Shorjah market, the main commercial center in Baghdad, the source said.

"One car bomb was parking in front of the Kinani building and the other one was parking some 100 meters away," the source said.

Earlier, the source said there was one car bomb detonated in the busy market. Two columns of black smoke rose over the area.

Meanwhile, a homemade bomb exploded in the Haraj market in Baghdad's al-Sharji area, the source added.
