Writethru: German FM confirms two Germans feared abducted in Iraq
font size

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday confirmed earlier reports that two Germans are feared to have been abducted in Iraq several days ago.

The German television of ZDF, the country's national public television broadcaster, reported that the German embassy in Baghdad imposed a blackout on the news that the two Germans were abducted last week.

However, another report by the German news agency DPA from Brussels quoted Steinmeier as saying that "a violent kidnapping" could not be ruled out.

Steinmeier, who is attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, said that the Foreign Ministry set up a crisis team last Tuesday to deal with the incident.

The foreign minister added that Germany is doing everything to ensure that "the two Germans are returned to their families unharmed."

Three German citizens kidnapped in Iraq in the past year were all released safely following the rescue efforts of the German government.
