Costa Rica deports nearly 3,000 undocumented foreigners
font size

Nearly 3,000 undocumented foreigners were arrested or repatriated by Costa Rican authorities along its borders in January, the country's Public Security Ministry said on Wednesday.

Among the foreigners were 2,358 Nicaraguans, 28 Panamanians, 10 Colombians and five U.S. citizens.

"The aliens were trying to enter Costa Rica illegally but were intercepted close to the border and deported," the ministry said in a statement.

Mario Zamora, the nation's director of Immigration, said that the Special Immigration Police and the Public Forces had worked together in frontier areas, which had increased the number of deportations.
