Guinean president agrees to name prime minister: report
font size

Guinean President Lansana Conte has agreed in principle to name a new prime minister, which is the main demand of unions holding a general strike in the past two weeks, according to reports on Wednesday.

Observers to negotiations between the government and unions were quoted as saying that the president had agreed to the unions' demand to appoint a prime minister, in what may be a move toward giving some of his power to the government.

In the past two weeks, Guinea has been paralyzed by a general strike and demonstrations demanding economic and political reforms. The protests and clashes have left dozens of people dead.
