Finland opposes execution of Saddam
font size

Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), criticized Saturday the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, saying that EU opposes the death penalty in all cases.

Tuomioja said in a statement that the EU opposes the death penalty also in the case of Saddam Hussein who was executed early Saturday morning.

There are certainly no doubts about the fact that Saddam Hussein was guilty of serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity, but that does not make the death penalty acceptable, Tuomioja said.
