Al-Qaida in Iraq offers to give U.S. troops safe withdrawal
font size

The head of an al-Qaida-backed group in Iraq has offered to give U.S. troops safe withdrawal in an audiotape posted on the Internet on Friday.

"We ask (U.S. President George W.) Bush not to waste this historic opportunity, and you have two weeks to consider it," said Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, head of the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq.

The group was announced in October by the al-Qaida and organizations affiliated to it.

The authenticity of the audiotape could not be verified.
