Chile's chamber of deputies, the lower house of parliament, on Tuesday passed a bill for creating two new administrative regions in the country.
According to the bill, which needs to be signed by the country's president to come into law, the two new regions are De Los Rios or the 14th Region, whose capital will be Valdivia, and Arica and Parinacota or the 15th region whose capital will be Arica.
The approval by the lower house of parliament was widely welcomed.
"This fulfills our great wish. Now we will start a campaign to change the electoral system, so we can have our own senators," said Carlos Valarce, the mayor of Arica.
Bernardo Berguer, the mayor of Valdivia, said he was very pleased to see Valdivians reunited, which is a dream the region has harbored for more than 30 years.
