Chile, Ecuador vow to deepen bilateral ties

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Ecuadorian President-elect Rafael Correa on Thursday vowed to deepen bilateral ties.

"We have reaffirmed our conviction to continue to deepen our ties. To deepen, among other things, economic agreements we have been working on so that we will all get benefits," Bachelet said after meeting with Correa at Chile's presidential seat Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago.

Bachelet said Chile and Ecuador still have the brotherly relationship that began with their liberator forefathers, adding that bilateral ties will be enhanced by the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

For his part, Correa expressed gratitude for invitating him to visit Chile and said Bachelet is not only the pride of Chile, but all of Latin America.

He also said he wanted to make progress on a FTA between the two countries.

Chile is a part of Correa's tour of South American nations before his inauguration as Ecuadorian president on Jan. 15, 2007.
