The National Forestation Commission and the Environment and Resource Protection Committee of the NPC held a forum to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the National Tree-Planting Campaign. Over the last 25 years, volunteers have planted over 49.2 billion trees on 10.4 billion occasions. This has pushed forest coverage from 12 percent in the early 1980s to 18.21 percent today. The percentage of green rural areas has risen from 10.1 percent to 31.66 percent.
