2nd East Asian summit will discuss cooperation in energy, bird flu and disaster
In an written interview with Xinhua, Philippine Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Erlinda Basilio said that the 2nd East Asian Summit to be held next week in Cebu will address pressing issues in security and economic fields, namely energy security, education, finance, bird flu and communicable diseases, and disaster mitigation.
The leaders of these countries and ASEAN member countries are also expected to issue a declaration on East Asia energy at the end of the summit, said Basilio.
The declaration will "synthesize" views of participants of the summit on energy ranging from energy conservation, energy efficiency, harmonization of standards of alternative sources of energy such as biofuels, to investment in emergency development and infrastructure as well as setting research centers and the use of clean technology to mitigate the effects of climate change and global warming, she said.
Most of ASEAN countries are net oil importers and their economies are subject to the impact of high oil prices.
Moreover, most ASEAN countries are also faced with the threat of bird flu and frequent natural disasters such as earthquake, tsunami and typhoon.
