China needs an additional 30 billion cubic meters of water annually
At the China Water Conservation Modernization Forum held recently in Wuxi, Zhai Haohui, the Vice Minister of Water Resources, said that country's efforts to conserve water were still insufficient to meet the needs of economic development, and that China needs to modernize the ways in which it conserves water to support and ensure the development of the social economy.
China's water conservation projects have already achieved much, but still do not meet the needs of economic development. Measures to defend against floods and droughts are not perfect, particularly along small and medium-sized rivers, and these losses account for 60 to 80 percent of China's total losses from floods. The droughts are equally problematic and devastating. China needs an additional 30 to 40 billion cubic meters of water every year. More than 400 cities in China lack or seriously lack water and the environment is starting to deteriorate.
