Palestine quits men's volleyball event at Doha Asiad
font size

Palestine has quit men's volleyball event of the Doha Asiad due to traveling difficulties, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) announced in Doha on Sunday.

The Palestine delegation just informed that there is no chance for its volleyball team to participate in the games as the border in Gaza Strip is still closed and no athletes or team officials can get out of Gaza, said Yim Hyung Bin, AVC's vice president in a press release.

It is not clear if other Palestine athletes can make their trips to Doha and their situation will be assessed on a day-by-day basis, said Yim.

Palestine is previously scheduled to play Hong Kong, China on Sunday and its withdrawal has given a toilless victory to the latter, which has thus guaranteed to enter round 2.

Indonesia and Turkmenistan had also quit the men's volleyball tournament before the event opened on Sunday.

Now, 16 teams will compete for the champion of the men's volleyball event. Host Qatar has directly entered the last eight with five world championship participants, namely China, Japan, South Korea, Iran and Kazakhstan.

However, another 10 teams, including Hong Kong, Macao and Chinese Taipei, have to compete for two other seats for the quarterfinals. All 45 matches of men's volleyball will be staged at the Al-Rayyan Indoor Hall in northwest suburb of Doha.
