At the opening of the 2006 China International Travel Commodities Fair, Yang Guoqing, Deputy Director of China's Civil Aviation Administration said that China now has the second largest air transport system in the world.

At the end of October, there were a total of 966 registered transport planes and 142 certified airports. The total volume of air transport has pushed China from ninth to second among nations belonging to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). China's air transport system is second in size only to the US, and was elected a top tier nation by the directors of the IATA.
