A senior official of the Communist Party of China has called for stronger political and legal efforts to safeguard social harmony and stability.

Luo Gan, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and secretary of the CPC Central Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs, made this call during a tour of Liaoning Province, northeast China, from Oct. 28 to 31.

Luo visited local courts, procuratorates, prisons and communities in Dalian, Anshan, Shenyang and Fushun cities. He visited the family of Zhao Zhenjin, a "model" police officer who died of a heart problem in September, and an exhibition on his life.

He spoke with local residents, including farmers and coalminers, to learn about their living conditions.

Luo urged local governments to try to resolve problems that affected the interests of the people and to safeguard the political rights of the people.

He was acompanied by Zhou Yongkang, a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, state councilor, and Minister of Public Security.
