A senior official with the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Monday called for enhancing efforts at ideology building of the police at grassroots level.

"The quality and professional level of the grassroots police is directly related to the overall ability of Chinese police in maintaining social stability," said Luo Gan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

Luo, also secretary of the Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, was speaking at a national conference on ideology building of the police in north China's Liaoning Province.

Luo stressed the police were facing more challenges in a fast-developing society, which forced them to extend their abilities in order to better play the indispensable role of social guardians.

Police departments at all levels should implement ideology building under the instruction of the Deng Xiaoping theory and the "Three Represents" thought, combining the concept of the scientific development and the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 16th Central Committee of the CPC, so as to maintain national security and social stability and contribute to the building of a harmonious and well-off society, Luo said.
