Bomb blasts kill 3 people, wounds 5 north of Baghdad
Bomb blasts detonated successively in Iraqi city of Samarra north of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing three people and wounding five others, local police said.
"A car bomb went off in the morning near the house of Shiekh Jasim Mumtaz, tribal leader in Samarra, wounding five people," a source in the Salahudin's provincial police told Xinhua.
"Shortly after a roadside bomb detonated when many people gathered in the area, killing three civilians," the source said on condition of anonymity.
"Shiekh Mumtaz, who survived the blasts, was targeted in the attack," the source said, adding that Mumtaz is known in Samarra of his opposition to the militant groups who kill civilians.
Last year, Mumtaz's brother was also killed in the city for the same reason, the source said.
Samarra, some 120 km north of Baghdad, has long been witnessing tensions as insurgents frequently attack the U.S. and Iraqi security forces.
