IOC observers inspect Beijing Olympic venues

A four-member IOC (International Olympic Committee) observation group inspected the Fengtai Softball Center to witness the ongoing Women's Softball World Championship, which features as the first Olympic test event in Beijing.

The observers inspected the two tournament fields inside and outside under the guidance of BOCOG working staff.

They checked the athlete medical station within the Field One to ask questions from time to time about everything they are interested, including the entrance security check, the volunteers, spectator entrance and the TV broadcast coverage.

They also viewed the training ground where the Netherlands were doing warm-up for the upcoming game against Greece and then attended a news conference given by China vs South Africa match.

Andrew Ryan and Kelly Fairweather, observers, exchanged ideas all through their inspection over the design, service and organization of the venue and tournament.

"I had been here in May when the Center is under construction, but it's my first time to be here with a tournament being on. It has been much spectacular three months later and also much impressive to walk around," said Ryan.

The observers just finished their tour of Qingdao International Regatta, also a preparatory event for Olympics, on Wednesday.

Fairweather gave positive comments over Qingdao's regatta site. "I just come here from Qingdao (East China). It's so impressive there and everything is really excellent," said Fairweather, sports director of IOC.

"We have been in Qingdao for two days before come here. We are generally satisfied with the two events. The construction of venues are excellent and the games go smoothly," added Fairweather.

"Qingdao's venue is very good and the sailing competition is good too, but of course some small things need to improve."

"Beijing still get two years to go and a lot of things can make progress. I don't like to give details for those to improve and I will write report of my inspection to IOC for discussion."

"Overall it's good and I have positive impressions on the test events and venues, but it's difficult to say whether everything here has reached the Olympic level. Beijing has 24 months and a lot of things will progress, I think," commented the South African member of IOC.

"The volunteers are well organized and very friendly, and that's so impressive."
