Vietnam welcomes the United Nations Resolution 1701 which aims to put an end to the violence occurring over the last month in south Lebanon, said a Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesman.

"Vietnam calls upon relevant parties to strictly implement the UN Resolution and adopt practical actions so that peace will soon return to the region," spokesman Le Dung said in a statement on a ceasefire effectively between Israel and Lebanon at 12:00 Hanoi time posted on the ministry's website on Monday.

The UN-brokered Israel-Lebanon cease-fire went into force at 0500 GMT on Monday.

On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution calling for Israel's withdrawal and authorizing an increase of the existing UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese government troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

Both Israel and Lebanon approved the resolution on Sunday.
