Chinese academics call for gov't support in research use

Chinese educators are complaining that insufficient government support is seriously hindering the industrial application of academic research achievements.

Less than 10 percent of scientific research developments and patents in colleges and universities had been utilized in production, said Chinese university presidents attending an international forum here.

They blamed inadequate investment support from the state.

"Instructors in Shanghai Jiaotong University submit more than 1,000 patents every year, but only 10 percent will be utilized and have social and economic returns," said the university's president Xie Shengwu.

"It's a huge waste. Many enterprises are eager to enhance their productivity with new scientific and innovative technologies," Xie said.

He called on the government to increase investment in the application of scientific research achievements by colleges and universities.
