Costa Rica press cheers Italy's World Cup win

Costa Rica's sporting press on Monday hailed Italy's World Cup triumph, but felt regrets at French midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who was sent off for headbutting Italian defender Marco Materazzi.

All of Costa Rica's papers ran front-page pictures of Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro lifting the Trophy with headlines including "Four-time winner Italy" and "The Clouded Triumph".

La Nacion said that the final could only have gone one way: the Italians would win on penalties after a game of much calculation.

The paper described Zidane's sending off as "a sad goodbye to a footballing genius".

"Zidane the Wizard should have been using his head to test the ball-handling skills of (Italian goalkeeper) Gianluigi Buffon. But instead he used it for a sneaky attack on Materazzi, which could have no other conclusion than a red card," the newspaper commented.

Zidane's attack came after an argument between the two during which Materazzi reportedly called Zidane, who is of Algerian parentage, "a dirty terrorist" and reportedly went on to call his only sister Laila "a whore". French non-governmental organization SOS Racism called for the incident to be investigated.

Al Dia said: "It was a very low class final. The Maestro clearly attacked Materazzi. It was a regrettable farewell."
