Rooney banned for two games

The world soccer ruling body FIFA handed a two-game ban on England striker Wayne Rooney on Saturday for his foul in a match against Portugal at the World Cup.

Rooney was red-carded by referee Horacio Elizondo for stamping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho in the second half of the quarterfinal match.

The striker had denied it was intentional, but the FIFA's disciplinary committee nevertheless suspended him from two international competitive matches, plus a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs (4,085 US dollars).

Under the ban, Rooney will miss the first two of England's 12 qualifying matches for the 2008 European Championship.

FIFA also imposed a four-game ban on Argentina defender Leandro Cufre and fined him 10,000 Swiss francs for his part in the melee after their quarter-final exit on penalties to Germany.

His team mate Maxi Rodriguez was banned for two matches and fined 5,000 Swiss francs for his role in the same incident.
