font size

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday congratulated Ramos Horta for his election as the new prime minister of neighboring Timor-Leste, a spokesman said.

"The president congratulated Ramos Horta, who is a friend of him, for his election as the prime minister," presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal told reporters here.

In the telephone conversation, the president also conveyed hope that Horta could solve major problems currently facing his country, said Dino.

The president believed that Horta, a Nobel prize winner with good international reputation and wide domestic support, "is the right figure to stand beside President Xanana Gusmao in overcoming domestic problems of Timor-Leste," Dino said.

During the conversation, Horta expressed hope to meet Susilo in Jakarta in the near future.

"The president welcomed his proposal and the schedule is being arranged by the foreign affairs ministries of both countries," said Dino.
