Ecuador President Alfredo Palacio presented the Sporting Merit medal to the members of the national soccer team on Monday, rewarding them for reaching the second round of the World Cup in Germany.

The team, the first Ecuadorian squad ever to reach the second round of the tournament, received their awards in the Carondelet Palace.

Also awarded were Ecuador Football Federation (FEF) president Luis Chiriboga, FEF vice-president Carlos Villacis and FEF general secretary Francisco Acosta.

After the ceremony, Palacio lunched with the medal-winners, whose achievements will also be honored at the National Congress.

In the World Cup group phase, Ecuador beat both Poland (2-0) and Costa Rica (3-0) but lost to hosts Germany (3-0): a performance that took them through to the second round. They lost 1-0 to England in their first game at the knockout round.
