Montenegro welcomes decision of Serbia to recognize its independence
font size

Montenegro's ruling Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Thursday welcomed the Serbian government 's decision to recognize Montenegro as a sovereign and independent state, the official Tanjug news agency reported.

"Although somewhat delayed, Belgrade's recognition of Montenegro's statehood and independence is a sign of good neighborly relations of two friendly countries and the SDP welcomes this act," SDP spokesman Branislav Radulovic was quoted as saying.

The Serbian government recognized Montenegro as an independent state on Thursday, when many European countries, along with the United States have already recognized Montenegro.

Montenegro declared independence on June 3 following the referendum on May 21, when 55.5 percent of its citizens voted to split from the state union with Serbia.
