China welcomes agreement on Darfur, says FM spokesman

China on Thursday welcomes the agreement between the U.N. Security Council and the African Union (AU) on handing over the peacekeeping mission in Sudan's western Darfur region.

The U.N. Security Council and the AU said Wednesday they agreed on a timetable to hand over the AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur to a U.N. force by January.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a regular press conference that the United Nations should respect the opinions of the AU and the Sudanese government on the issue of taking over the peacekeeping mission.

China always pays high attention to the situation in Darfur, hoping that all concerned parties would continue their efforts to promote the implementation of the peace agreement, and to achieve all-round peace in this region at an early date.
