font size

Eight people, including six policemen, were killed and five others wounded in separate attacks in Baghdad on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry source said.

An Iraqi civilian was killed and two of his children were injured when a mortar round landed at 6:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) on their house in the Baladiyat neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, four Iraqi policemen and a civilian were killed at 7:15 a.m. (0315 GMT) when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a group of policemen in Baghdad's western district of Mansur, the source said.

Meanwhile, two police officers-- a colonel and a major-- were killed and two policemen wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in Baghdad's eastern district of Zaiyouna, the source said.

A police vehicle was also destroyed in the attack, he said.

Another policeman was injured and a nearby building was set on fire when a roadside bomb went off in the Zuhour Intersection in western Baghdad, he added.

Violence has mounted in Iraq despite the formation of a national unity government on May 20.
