Turkish soldier killed, 8 wounded in rebel attack in eastern Turkey
font size

Guerrillas of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) killed one Turkish soldier and wounded eight others in a clash Sunday evening in eastern Turkey, the semi- official Anatolia news agency reported on Monday.

The armed clash occurred on the highway near the city of Bingol, said the report, adding that the injured were rushed to Bingol State Hospital for medical treatment.

Turkish security forces have launched an operation in pursuit of the PKK rebels who escaped following the clash, said the report.

The PKK took up arms against the Turkish government for an independent state in southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking decades of strife that has claimed more than 30,000 lives.
