Australia announces further aid for Timor-Leste
font size

Australia will provide an additional 2 million dollars (1.5 million U.S. dollars) in aid for victims of violence in Timor-Leste, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said in a statement on Monday.

Downer said 1 million dollars will be spent on urgently needed food, water, shelter and medical supplies, while another 1 million dollars will be channeled through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and other international agencies.

The amount will bring to 3 million dollars (2.25 million U.S. dollars) the total humanitarian aid Australia has announced to help the estimated 90,000 people who have fled homes since the outbreak of violence in Timor-Leste.

Australia has already committed 1 million dollars to non- government agencies on the ground in Timor-Leste's capital of Dili and sent urgently needed medical equipment and blood supplies to Dili Hospital over the weekend.
