Rene Radembino Coniquet, the former chairman of the law and administration committee in Gabon's senate, was elected as the new senate speaker with 95.56 percent of the vote on Wednesday.

The country's former senate speaker Georges Rawiri passed away in Paris on April 9 at the age of 74.

Coniquet, who is currently 73 years old, was the sole candidate in the election of the new speaker. He won 86 of the total 90 votes and his term will expire in 2009.

Coniquet, born in Libreville in June 1932, had been the chairman of the law and administration committee in the senate since 1997.

The Gabonese parliament has two chambers: the national assembly and the senate. The two chambers share the legislative authority. The senate came into existence in 1997 and is composed of 91 members who have six-year terms.
