Pakistan to launch cyber-crime unit in leading investigative agency

Pakistan is establishing a cyber- crime unit in its law enforcement body Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), local media reported on Wednesday.

Pakistani Minister of State for Interior Zafar Iqbal Warraich on Tuesday said his ministry would help FIA establish a cyber- crime unit and special laws will be made to make it a more effective investigation agency of the federal government, Pakistani newspaper DAWN reported.

The FIA should prepare a database of criminals to control crimes and terrorism, and a comprehensive terrorist information system will be helpful in the international war against terrorism, the minister was quoted by DAWN as saying.

At present, the FIA deals cyber crime cases under the Electronic Transaction Ordinance, and it detected 26 cyber crime cases during the past year, the report said.

The FIA is Pakistan's leading investigative agency tasked to control immigration, curb human trafficking, combat terrorism and contribute to detect specialized and organized crimes. Headquartered in Islamabad, it has over 40 offices across the country.
