British government condemns blasts in Egypt
font size

British government strongly condemned deadly blasts in the Egyptian resort town of Dahab on Monday.

In a statement, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said "I utterly condemn these appalling bombings in Dahab, which have been targeted at popular holiday resort and on an Egyptian public holiday."

"Once again terrorists have demonstrated their callous disregard for human life," he said. "I have sent a message of condolences and solidarity to the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit and we are in close touch with the Egyptian authorities."

"The people of Egypt have shown great resolve in the face of previous terrorist attacks," he added. "We stand side by side with them once again in offering our full support and deepest sympathies."

At least 22 peoples were killed and up to 150 wounded in three blasts in the Egyptian resort town of Dahab during the early evening when many people were out in cafes and restaurants.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called the blasts a "wicked terrorist act", and U.S. President George Bush described it as a " heinous act".

The Hamas-led Palestinian government said it "strongly condemns this criminal act which flouts our religion, shakes Palestinian national security and works against Arab interests".
