Anti-Thaksin leader a no-show for lese majeste interrogation

Sondhi Limthongkul, arch-critic of Thai media mogul and caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, failed to show up Monday for police interrogation over lese majeste charges.

Suvat Aphaiphak, Sondhi's lawyer, asked Crime Suppression Division Commander Vinai Thongsong to delay the police questioning until May 17, saying his client should have been given more than a seven-day timeframe to prepare himself against the charges of lese majeste as published in local Thai-language Kom Chad Luek newspaper last month.

The lawyer produced the names of nine persons whom he said may be summoned by the police as witnesses for his client.

Nonetheless, the Crime Suppression Division commander rejected Sondhi's request for extended time.

Sondhi, one of the key leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy, a coalition of anti-Thaksin groups, is expected to have another 10 days to prepare himself for police questioning. An arrest warrant will likely be issued for Sondhi, should he fail to show up for the second time.
