A photo can be more persuasive than a thousand words.
Showing photos of a boiler house to a score of journalists, a Chinese official and two doctors on Wednesday lashed Falun Gong's rumor on a so-called "concentration camp" where, the cult lied, its followers were cremated after organ harvesting.
The small window-paned boiler house with a brick chimney standing nearby in a residential garden only serves for civilian use, said Zhang Xu, vice president of a hospital in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang.
Since March 8, Falun Gong followers have spread the rumor, saying more than 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners were imprisoned at a "concentration camp" in Sujiatun, a district in Shenyang.
They rumored that many of the followers were cremated after their organs were harvested.
Falun Gong followers later changed their wording that the "concentration camp" was established in a small hospital, the Sujiatun Hospital on Thrombus Diseases, where Zhang acted as a vice president.
"A picture of so-called crematorium in Sujiatun widely used on Falun Gong's websites is actually a photo of the back of our boiler house, shot from outside the hospital compound, and my photo shows you the front side of the boiler house," Zhang said.
Zhang said the window-paned boiler house, taking up an area of 180 square meters, is open to the public and "as it is located in front of the residential garden, everybody can see it."
"How could that boiler be a cremation furnace?" Zhang refuted. "I don't know whether Falun Gong followers are ignorant or they just try to fool the whole world!"
He said the boiler was used to provide winter heat, disinfect medical equipments, and cook food for patients and their families.
Sitting with Zhang on Wednesday's news briefing was Zheng Bin, the vice head of the district government of Sujiatun. She denounced the rumor of Falun Gong as "groundless".
"There were Falun Gong followers in Sujiatun, but all of them are now receiving rehabilitation programs in places outside the district," Zheng said.
There are only one prison, one detention house, but no Falun Gong rehabilitation centers in the district with 430,000 population and located some 15 kilometers away from the center of Shenyang, Zheng said.
"Falun Gong followers slung mud at both my district and the country with the absurd, malicious lie," Zheng said, calling on the international community to reprimand their despicable acts.
Zhang Yuqin, another vice-president of the hospital, said the hospital, with only 300 beds, has no enough space for 6,000 people at all, nor the "basement" or "cremator".
"Their lies on the 'concentration camp' is sheer fabrication, and that on organ harvesting was utter nonsense," she said.
Zhang Xu said the hospital stuff and residents of Sujiatun at large had received lots of phone calls from overseas since March 18, some ringing up even at midnight to check information or sheerly to disturb.
"It had affected the life of people," Zhang said.
"I don't know why Falun Gong targeted at our hospital, maybe because it is famous," Zhang said, adding that the hospital has a good reputation in treating thrombus diseases with method combining western pharmacy and traditional Chinese herbs.
The hospital annually receives nearly 300,000 patients from 21 provinces and municipalities, as well as from foreign countries including the Republic of Korea, the United States, Russia, Malaysia and the Philippines, they said.
Referring to a so-called former cerebrovascular doctor of the hospital cited by a Falun Gong Website report, Zhang Yuqin said the hospital has "absolutely no such a veteran doctor". Zhang has been working in the Sujiatun hospital since 1990.
"Anyone with a little medical knowledge knows that a cerebrovascular doctor cannot conduct cornea transplant surgery as Falun Gong media said," Zhang noted.
She said the hospital, as a specialized thrombus institute, has no equipment and qualifications to conduct transplant surgeries.
On March 31, all the working staff with the Sujiatun hospital issued a statement to refute the rumor on its Website, www.thrombusres-cn.net. And Zhang said the hospital welcomed the visits of domestic and foreign journalists.
"We will reserve our rights to affix the legal responsibility for the evil behavior of the cult and its media," she said.
