Yahoo! China has completed its adjustment to the Chinese search engine, abandoning the search mode using "one search box".
Lack of interaction is one major deficiency of the search mode using only one search box. It cannot embody the features of the Web 2.0 era,i.e. communication, interaction and community. Moreover, the mode caters better to western users, and may not be suited for Chinese users, said executive general manager of Yahoo! China's search division.
"Chinese people should have Chinese search engine fitting their needs. Offering a search mode with Chinese characteristics is Yahoo's aim," he said.
Yahoo! China launched the simple search homepage last November. On March 30, it added content, search, tool, community and recommendations on the homepage. On the right side of the page such new contents as "recommended headlines", "latest info", "recommend music", "recommended pictures", "knowledge hall" have been made available. "Info", "community" and "Yahoo messenger" icons have been added on the top section of all pages.
The number of web pages available for search now approaches one billion, therefore how to acquire efficient and useful info has become an imperative problem, Mao Xin, head of operations with Yahoo!China said. What Web 2.0 promotes, i.e. communication, interaction and community, might be a solution.
Mao Xin believes better, customized search service needs information about user's demands. At the same time, the info should be placed on the homepage of the search engine so that more people will share majority people's choice. "In one word, in the future it is the users, not the editors that will adjust the contents of Yahoo, or even the homepage."
At the beginning of the year, Yahoo!China has already integrated contents, community, instant messenger, free mail service and with search service to bring better experience to users. In February, it launched Yahoo Knowledge Hall, a new attempt to integrate search service with knowledge share community. The new service has become an important supplement to Yahoo!China's key words based search.
Adjustment to the homepage is just the first step; Yahoo!China will launch a series of vertical search services such as movie search, shopping search and tourism info search.
According to Mao Xin, Yahoo!China will present brand new shopping search this year, a service that is not only available for its own websites like Taobao and Alibaba, but also for other domestic shopping websites including Ebay, Dangdang and Joyo.
