China is ready to establish and develop normal relations with Panama based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence, said a leading official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday.
"China attaches great importance to developing relations with Panama," said Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Wu made the remarks at a meeting with a delegation from the Democratic Revolutionary Party (DRP) of Panama, headed by DRP President Hugo Giraud.
China and Panama, as developing countries, have complementary economies and share common goals in maintaining world peace and promoting economic development, said Wu.
"Panama has become the fifth trading partner of China in Latin America while China is the second largest user of the Panama Canal," Wu added.
On party relations, the CPC will further enhance cooperation and exchanges with the parties in Panama, including the DRP, in order to increase understanding and mutual trust, said Wu.
Giraud said the DRP sincerely hopes it can make a contribution to promoting normalization of bilateral relations through friendly cooperation with the CPC.
