China unveiled on March 23 its top ten ships, which were selected by 14 departments including China's Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Communications.

The top ten ships are: Dongfeng, China's first self-designed, self-built 10,000-ton ocean-going ship, the first generation missile destroyer, Xiangyanghong 10, China's first multi-functional large ocean research vessel, Changcheng, the country's first exported vessel built according to international standards, China's first generation nuclear ballistic missile submarine, Bohai Youyi, the first oil processing and storage ship, the new conventional nuclear submarine, the new missile destroyer, Yuanwang 3, a spacecraft tracking, telemetering and control ship, Delvar, China's first 300,000-ton VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier).

China's manufacturing of civilian vessels amounted to 12.12 million dead weight tonnages (dwt) in 2005 with exports to more than 110 countries and regions, taking up 17 percent of the world's ship-building market. China has made herself the third largest ship builder in the world.
