font size

Five Chadian candidates, including incumbent President Idriss Deby Itno, have registered with the Constitutional Council for the May 3 poll, reports from N'djamena said Saturday.

The campaigners had entered the registration by Friday night, the deadline for the procedure, said the reports citing the country's national independent electoral commission.

Deby, who has been nominated to run for a third five-year term by his ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement, is facing a "small" competition from four other contenders, including former prime minister Kassire Coumakoye, current agriculture minister Pahimi Padacke Albert, as well as Mahamat Abdoulaye and Brahim Koulamallah, according to the reports.
